Leah, Care Assistant

Working as a Hairdresser I always knew I liked looking after people and after 20 years in the profession I decided it was now or never and I applied for a Care Assistant role. That was 18 months ago and I’ve not looked back since!

Being completely new to the job felt daunting at first, but I shouldn’t have worried because I was buddied up with a more experienced member of staff, had a clear job description and training to complete, all of which helped me.

The residents I look after are so lovely, and just like in hairdressing you adapt to each person and learn how they would like things done which is really important.

I have recently won the 2018 British Care Award for Newcomer of the Year which I’m extremely proud of; my only regret is that I didn’t do this years ago!

If you’re considering a job in care I’d say if your patient and caring you really need to try it, don’t believe the negative stories and bad press you might sometimes see and decide for yourself if the job could work for you.

As for the future I’ve developed a love for learning and I want to progress to take Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications which my employer is supportive of me doing.
