Sylvia, Care Assistant

I started working in care over 40 years ago and did this alongside a full time job as a receptionist for many years.

Things have really changed over the time I’ve worked in care, there are a lot more resources in place such as hoists and we undertake regular, relevant training, which for me has included completing an NVQ Level 3 qualification.

I get a lot of satisfaction from this job, some residents don’t receive many visitors and they value the time I spend with them, many of them say they look on me as a “good friend” and that I really help them which is lovely to hear.

I’ve met residents who don’t always want to get involved in activities and in this instance we try and find what works for them individually and adjust activities to get them engaged. One gentleman had been a keen gardening so we created a small space he could go and grow seeds and small plants.

This isn’t a job that anybody can do, you’ve got to put your heart into it, and when you do this it can be hugely rewarding.
