Lesley, Care Assistant

Before working in care, I managed a family owned DIY shop in Chichester. When the shop closed I was looking for a new career that involved working with people because I really enjoy interacting with customers. After a spell at waitressing I applied for a job in care and haven’t looked back – I absolutely love it!

I am a home carer at Guardian Angel Carers I visit clients in their own homes and care for their varied needs. I do shopping, cleaning, give medication, personal care and make sure they are safe and well. Every day is different!  One of the main things is to be a great companion and spend time just chatting and laughing with my clients. It’s really important to get to know them and build a relationship. One of my clients is 96 and very independent, she insists on making me a cup of tea and really keeps me on my toes!

I work part-time at the hours that suit me, work locally to where I live and travel by car to clients around the Chichester area.

The training I received when I started in care was very thorough and the on-going support is always there, if I’m visiting a client I know I can always call the office if I need any guidance or advice. I feel really appreciated by my employer and work with a great team.

To be a good carer you need to be friendly, versatile, quick thinking and enjoy conversation.

Not only do I feel like I’m giving something back but the people I care for give so much to me too. I feel so valued and appreciated, I wouldn’t go back to working in retail now.
